Hostel Mamallena is a real backpackers hostel. It is super clean with all the trimmings you could ask for. Tasmanian owner, Stuart has a super relaxed attitude towards the running of the hostel which only adds to the great ambience. There are no set rules you have to follow but you are asked to respect the hostel and it's guests.
Due to the overwhelming amount of apartment blocks going up in Panama City, after taking over the hostel in 2006, Stuart has had to move the hostel to a this new location. The hostel is now located in a quiet street off Via Espana where the local kids come to steal the cricket bat for a quick game in the street. It has a few supermarkets around that can supply the basics, it's also walking distance to the old part of town and more importantly, the nightlife. Even if you don't stay here, pop in and have a beer and a chat - you are more than welcome!
The hostel offers a free all day pancake breakfast (just ask if there is no mixture), a fully equipped kitchen, internet access (with skype and WiFi), cheap honesty system bar, a growing book exchange, safe boxes for your personals and a DVD library. The reception is open 24 hours and there is no curfew. The common areas and outdoor patio provide for a great way to meet other travellers.
There is a wealth of information on things to do in and around Panama City ranging from the top 10 must do's to a run down on the favourite bars. Tours to the San Blas Islands and boats to Colombia can also be booked here and Stuart keeps an updated list of captains sailing to Cartagena as well as a comments book for those who have made this trip to provide some insight for other travellers. There are also plans to get on board with some local operators and provide cheap day trips from the city.
If your taking the bus, chances are you will come from the Albrook Station. Jump on any bus that says Via Espana and ask to be dropped off on Avenida Peru near Farmacias Arrochas in Perijil. Via Espana is one block further away at this end of town.
