Playa Gigante might well be an authentic traveller’s paradise. It’s a low key, beach community with a touch of foreigner friendly comfort, but not enough to create a divide between foreigners and locals.
Gigante retains its rural fishing village identity and although it is embracing modernization (at its own pace) it is still a place where animals and children make up a majority of the local traffic.
You won’t find any tourist herding touts in Gigante, however if you ask around there is plenty to do. Water taxis to nearby surf spots can be arranged. As can surf lessons, board rental, fishing, snorkel trips, sunset cruises or horse riding. There is a Spanish school specialising in emersion teaching and two NGO aid organisations active in town.
Visiting Gigante, now definitely qualifies you to be one of those travellers who one day can say “I was there before it was well known”.
